Join us at our Barrio Logan location on Saturday, January 27th from 1-4 pm to celebrate the Emilio Nares Foundation‘s Heart and Sole Run! Come and share a beer with Richard Nares, the founder of ENF and hear his powerful story of how the foundation came to be and how it helps children all throughout San Diego and beyond.
More details to come on the event but there will be food, crafts for kids and a special ENF Beer to toast all of the hard work that goes into making the run happen! Here’s a little more info on Richard and the Heart and Sole Run:
The Emilio Nares Foundation (ENF) was founded in 2003 by Richard and Diane Nares after losing their son Emilio to cancer just shy of his 6th birthday. ENF is a nonprofit organization that helps families navigate their child’s journey through cancer, and support each child’s best chance of recovery.
Through their own journey, the Nareses met hundreds of families without resources to care for a child with cancer, often missing cancer treatment appointments because they lacked transportation to get their child to the hospital. ENF launched Ride With Emilio in 2005 after Richard became overwhelmed driving young patients to treatment in his personal vehicle when they had no other transportation options. Ride With Emilio now has helped many families get to hospital appointments throughout the Logan Heights, National City, and South Bay communities as well as other areas of San Diego, Inland Empire, and Orange County.
When Emilio was going through his cancer treatment in Boston, he saw the Boston marathon runners outside the hospital room. Richard made a promise to Emilio that if he could be strong in his fight, Richard could find the strength to run the Boston marathon. Richard kept that promise and has since run the Boston marathon three times. In 2013, Richard ran 700 miles across California and raised $75,000 to support ENF’s programs.
Beginning in June, Richard will be running from SEATTLE to SAN DIEGO stopping at 9 children’s hospitals along his route to raise funds and awareness of ENF programs and to distribute Emilio’s Loving Tabs shirts. Emilio’s Loving Tabs are shirts with snaps on the shoulder and sleeve to facilitate access to chemotherapy for children with cancer. The breathable shirts provide a sense of normalcy so children don’t have to take off or lift a shirt to receive treatment. A game changer for kids, parents, and hospital staff!
This kick-off party at Thorn will be to celebrate and raise awareness of the organization’s next step, which is to expand their programs across the state in order to help more children who are in need of their support!
